The San Diego Padres began in the Pacific Coast league in 1936, beginning their rich historic success with Hall of Fame Ted Williams in his rookie season. 1969 was the Padres' first year in Major League baseball, packing in the stands but having limited success at Jack Murphy Stadium. After several disappointing seasons which were to be expected from a young team, the San Diego Padres finally found success in 1984, winning the division title and getting their first World Series appearance. They currently play at PETCO Park and have won two division titles since moving there in 2004. The San Diego Padres' franchise accomplishments include two World Series appearances, two LCS appearances, two National League pennants, and five division titles.
This 2008 season, the San Diego Padres are looking to take back the division title and make a run at the World Series championship once again. New manager Bud Black looks to improve upon a less than great start to this year (their record currently being 28-37) by improving chemistry and team play towards a mid-season turnaround. The first pitcher to win the Cy Young Award and the player to win a record 17 Golden Glove Awards, future Hall-of-Famer Greg Maddux, leads this team. He is the rock around which this team has been built and continues to produce season after season. Without anyone helping him out this year, tickets are selling slowly to fans questioning whether or not this team can go all the way with just one superstar.
